In 1988, the Mint introduced the Silver Maple Leaf, a $5 CAD legal-tender coin containing one troy ounce of 99.99% pure silver.

The coin showcases one of Canada's most iconic images: the sugar maple leaf, displayed prominently on the reverse. The sugar maple is found across Canada, and its instantly recognizable leaves turn from yellow to brilliant red with the seasons. The maple is Canada's national tree, so it is fitting that its leaf appears on everything from the Canadian flag to the nation's currency.

What Does a Silver Maple Leaf Look Like?

Silver Maple Leafs feature a sugar maple leaf on the reverse and, historically, an effigy of the Queen on the obverse. Three different portraits of Queen Elizabeth II appeared on the series over the years. The maple leaf design has remained mostly unchanged since its debut, though the Mint has added security features over time that subtly change the coin's appearance while helping confirm its authenticity.

Following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, the obverse now features an effigy of King Charles III. Created by acclaimed artist Steven Rosati and approved by Buckingham Palace, the portrait offers a strikingly modern depiction of the monarch and marks the beginning of a new era for Canadian Maple Leaf coins. Coins bearing Queen Elizabeth's image remain legal tender and continue to circulate alongside those featuring the King.

How Can You Tell If a Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coin Is Real Silver?

There are several ways to check whether a Silver Maple Leaf is genuine, including looking for the security mark, examining the radial lines and testing the coin with a precious metal verifier.

The security mark is a small maple leaf laser-engraved on the lower right side of the reverse. Hold the coin up to the light or look through a magnifying glass, and you should be able to see it.

Royal Canadian Mint Security

In 2014, the Royal Canadian Mint upgraded the Silver Maple Leaf with a micro-engraved security mark on the reverse and precise radial lines on both sides of the coin. These features make the Maple Leaf much harder to counterfeit and help protect collections around the world.

Since around 2020, the Mint has also applied a surface treatment called MINTSHIELD, which helps reduce the appearance of white "milk spots" on the coins without affecting their overall look.

The engraving is just as intricate as earlier incuse coins, but the extra depth adds a striking new dimension to this famous design. Some Super Incuse Maple Leafs include special features. The 2022 edition, for example, combined a Reverse Proof finish with selective rose-gold plating for a truly stunning result.

Pulsating Maple Leafs
